The subject matter of the present workshop was once pointed out a number of years in the past and was once thought of by means of the operating staff of the nationwide huge Bowel melanoma undertaking to be a suitable workshop subject. even if the topic was once very important then, it used to be impossible to behavior this sort of workshop at the moment. in the mean time, not just did the issues linked to colorectal metastasis nonetheless exist, yet new insights at the biology and therapy of colorectal melanoma metastasis emerged, making the workshop subject particularly vital and correct. With enter from knowledgeable making plans Committee, a distinct software was once designed to supply a chance for info alternate among uncomplicated scientists and medical investigators. the printed court cases replicate the association of the workshop which consisted of 5 sections: part I. The Biology of Colorectal melanoma Metastasis co-chaired through Drs. J. Isaiah Fidler and George Poste Controversies within the administration of sufferers with Colorectal melanoma part II.

Aestivation: Molecular and Physiological Aspects

Quite a few animal species stay in environments characterised by way of a seasonal relief within the availability of water, which frequently yet no longer consistently happens while temperatures are optimum. for plenty of such animals, survival throughout the hardest season calls for spending lengthy sessions of time in a slightly inactive nation referred to as aestivation.

30 3 THE COTTON-TOP TAMARIN AS AN ANIMAL MODEL OF COLORECTAL CANCER METASTASIS Neal K. Clapp, Clarence C. Lushbaugh, Gretchen L. Humason, Barbara L. Gangaware, and Marsha A. Henke SUMMARY The lack of satisfactory animal models for colorectal cancer has restricted the study of and significant progress in diagnosing and treating this very important human disease. High incidences of colon cancer in the cotton-top tamar in, Saguinus ~~dipus oedipus, mean that this animal is a potentially useful model for the study of causative agents and mechanistic and therapeutic aspects of this disease.

X 50) Such vindication of the "seed and soil" hypothesis of Paget has implications not only for clinical issues, such as knowing where to look for residual systemic disease after therapy, but also for understanding mechanisms underlying metastatic spread. Once it is accepted that tumors are composed of heterogeneous populations of tumor cells (see preceding section and reference 14) scattered more or less representatively throughout the body after mixing in the vortex of the blood (13) and that they reproducibly grow in some sites and not others, it follows that individual organs permit or inhibit secondary 47 tumor formation by metastasis-competent cells and hence that cells of ngrmal organs can, on occasion, suppress or at least fail to support malignant growth.
